Although over the years I’ve been buying and selling iron beds to the entertainment community, none have a fonder memory than the scrolled black twin size iron bed I did for the movie “Casper”.
It was a memorable one because it was the first time my first daughter, then 6 yrs old, realized what I did for a living.
“That looks just like the beds that you have Daddy”. my daughter said when the iron beds we had done for Christina Ricci’s came on the screen. When I told her it was one of our beds and that she had seen it when it was being readied and painted for the movie, she was beside herself. All of a sudden my status was elevated in her eyes. It was a very fun memory. She turned 21 this week and still remembers seeing it in the movie. Seeing our iron beds in movies now has become so common place, it’s rare that we even mention it.
The entertainment community and their interior designers have been very good to me. One year we were watching the Oscar’s and counting the number of people we saw that had gotten iron beds from us over the years. It was over 2 dozen people.
We were quite lucky to have opened our store where we did and to have sold iron beds to some very high profile people that had their homes shot for magazines like Architectural Digest, Metropolitan Home, Traditional Home etc. We were also very fortunate to have been given written credit for the iron beds we did, in the back of the magazine. I remember the first iron bed we had done that was in a national decorating magazine. The day the magazine hit the stands, I was unable to take lunch that day because the phone kept ringing off the hook. It had been a beautiful canopy iron bed we had converted to king size. The photo took up an entire page and looked great. The only problem was, everyone that called, wanted that exact iron bed. Few of them realized I dealt in antique iron beds…….not reproductions.
Our customers in the entertainment community were always very kind in their referrals. Bill Bell was one of the best. Bill was the creator of The Young And The Restless and wrote it for a record setting 25 years. While he was still writing the show he had purchased a couple of very attractive rather stately iron beds from me. Bill was known for entertaining the people in his show and throwing epic parties. It was at those parties that we were fortunate enough for the iron beds we sold Bill to get a good degree of exposure.
At one time we had 6 of the actors and 3 of the producers on the show who had all gotten iron beds from us. That was not as uncommon a thing to happen as you might think. I’ve had numerous shows and movies that we started by selling one person an iron bed and others would follow suit.
People in the entertainment community are a very discerning group and would no sooner buy something they think they’ll see at a friends house, than they’d pass up an Oscar. Antique Iron Beds enable everyone to be the individual they want to be.
