For all of you wine connoisseurs and vineyard owners…….here’s one of the more unique and collectible antique iron beds I”ve come across. We came across it in a small town on the banks of the Mississippi River in Louisiana. Telltale markings would place this bed around the year 1820.
The castings are as unique and well detailed as you’ll ever see. There very fine veins in the leaves of the grapes. All of those leaf castings were painted with gold guilding…….. which has aged over the years to give a beautiful worn patina to them.
It’s quite rare to come across an antique iron bed that has the original paint finish from when it was built. And for that paint finish to be in such incredible condition. This was obviously a bed that had been owned by a family who appreciated how good and special a bed it was.
Iron beds sometimes will paint of picture of a story they’re trying to tell. This one certainly has a tale to tell.
Since originally posting this blog, I sold this bed to a couple in Sweeden who actually have a wine vineyard. Although we converted it to a larger size, they wanted us to maintain the original “finish” and just touch up the pieces we added to blend with the original old “finish”. It was an incredible bed they have since said they are very very happy with.
