Many years ago, after opening my store in Santa Monica Ca., I had the distinct pleasure of selling the first of many subsequent iron beds to the one and only “Boss”, Bruce Springsteen. He and his wife Patti wondered into my store one afternoon and proceeded to select one of the best antique iron beds I’ve ever come across. When dealing with people in the public eye, like Bruce, you always have a preconceived notion of what they’re like. In this instance I was right on track and very pleasantly surprised. Not only were he and his wife one of the nicest people I’ve encountered in the entertainment industry, but I was impressed with how considerate of each other they were, and how polite and attentive they were with me. Their questions were far more intelligent than my garden variety customer that would come in to the store. The history of beds and how they came about and their practical purpose was of legitimate interest to him and Patti. Here was a person that could obviously have afforded any kind of bed he wanted……. many times over. That he decided to get a bed from me at Cathouse , made me feel quite good. Antique iron beds and their rarity have always appealed to people who don’t want something off an assembly line.
