The beauty of just about anything in life, be it a beautiful woman, or a piece of bedroom furniture, can be enhanced by the way you accessorize them . Bracelets , necklaces and earrings on one , and lamps, pillows and comforters on the other.
Although a Spartan setting might call for a minimal amount of accessorizing. I’ve yet to see an iron bed that didn’t look considerably better with it’s surroundings chosen to help highlight it’s importance in the bedroom.
Keep in mind, it’s called a bedroom for a good reason. Because the main piece of furniture that is to be the focal point is the bed. So great care should be taken to select things that are going to embellish and highlight your main focal point.
Most people start with the linens , bed coverings, dust ruffles and pillows. The combinations and choices are limitless. From the number and size of the pillows you select to the quilt, blanket or duvet you decide on. Get ready for a lot of fun decisions. And I do mean fun. Look for something that is pleasing to your eye, something that puts a smile on your face. Designers and decorators have a great eye for what is conventionally acceptable and within the bounds of good taste. But do you really want to live with someone else’s taste. Over the past 40 years of selling antique iron beds, I’ve had more people say “let me show it to my designer to see what she thinks”. This tells me one of three things……First: They afraid to think for themselves and are insecure about the own taste or possibly Two: they hired a designer and want to be sure and get their money’s worth. Or Three: they’re not really interested and it’s a convenient “exit” line. My response to this statement, no matter what their reason is always, ” are you by chance sleeping with your designer? Because if your not, why would you want their advice on something you’re going to be spending a lot of time in and they’re not?” I don’t know…..maybe that’s a little harsh. But step up to the plate…..you have taste, bad or good……it doesn’t matter,it’s your taste and you should be allowed to live with it. Take stock of where you live…..the good old USA. We’re not told what to eat, what religion to follow, what political party to join or a host of other wonderful choices we have that generations before us fought for. So why let someone tell you what type of bed you should be sleeping in. Enjoy your own choice….. not what someone else tells you should have.
The selection of what you should appoint your bed with also should bring a smile to your face and make you feel good about when you look at it. Some of the most well appointed and designed rooms I’ve come across, are those that people got all of their items at garage sales or flea markets. I’ve also been in some of the most prestigious homes you can imagine, only to find a tremendous amount of money spent to look grandiose and perfect. I’ve seen a lot of people throw a lot of money at designing a bedroom. Yet after talking to them about what they like, it’s rarely what the designer gave them.
Accessorizing , should also be an ongoing project. It should be fun hunting for an item to set on a table or for the table itself. Enjoying the process. You might not always hit a home run with your selections…… but they’ll be your selections and nobody ever said you had to live with them, if you decided on something else.
Here’s a suggestion if you’re feeling a little insecure on any design project. There’s a wonderful social media site called Pinterest. It’s a site that their followers “pin” their favorite photo’s to albums that you can look at. Every and anything under the sun can be searched for . type in anything from bedrooms to towel racks. You’ll find dozens of people that have their own collection of photo’s of just what you’re looking for. It’s a fantastic reference tool with tons of examples. You’ll definitely see what appeals to you and what doesn’t. It will give you a direction and often even the resource to obtain what it is you’re looking at.
