Draping was a very popular design element, when it came to fancier iron beds. Where did this element come from. I first heard, was from an old “picker” in Pennsylvania, when he refer to the soft iron rod drapes on a bed as “Wedding Cake” draping. It seems the decorative frosting on a wedding cake, would drape along the sides of the cake. This visual was a very festive design that was picked up in many other types of wooden furniture and hand carvings. Always looking for more acceptance and recognition , small independently owned foundries were fast to pick up on this popular design element and integrated it into many of their designs.
