When considering a Southwestern Adobe Style for your bedroom, there are a few important things you’re going to want to address before selecting a bed. From many vintage photo’s that I’ve seen over the years, iron beds were used quite a bit in these early desert homes. The desert landscape and the bright colors of Native American Indian , are a good starting point for the feel of your room. One of the many good things about this style of decorating is that it marries comfort and style. Colors that will help you bring the Southwestern look up to speed are,Turquoise, brown, sand, red, green, yellow and orange. The physical items such as wood, wrought iron, clay and stone will blend beautifully with this style.
The first thing you’re going to want to do is select a color for your walls. A Southwestern decor involves soft earth tone colors, that you might encounter in nature or the desert.
If you’re really starting from go on your room, you’re now going to want to think about the floor. Once again……..think nature tones, hardwood, or Terracotta tiles. Terracotta tiles will ready give you that old adobe feel. Short of a dirt floor, old looking distressed tile is going to really set the tone. If carpeting is your thing…….you might want to look at large old Indian rugs with native American designs. Another great possibility are cowhide. They can be found in black and white or brown and white.
OK ……Now we’re down to furniture. Consider lighter toned wood furniture……not dark heavy looking wood. Leather chairs are great especially if you can find a nicely distressed old one with character, not always an easy find……but a great look.
Old antique iron beds are a great addition. Especially if you select a cream or sandy colored distress finish to blend nicely with the walls and flooring. Umber and other brown tones should be incorporated into the finish. If you’d like a little more contrast between your walls and your bed frame……consider a distressed Black iron finish that has rust tones to highlight the castings. This will give you the contrast you might want to achieve , yet the rust and rubbed in brown tones will make your bed look appropriate for the Southwestern setting.
Because you might be getting a tad busy with Indian rugs etc. You might want to think about a plainer bedspread. Something with neutral tones. The accent your bed with colorful pillows in rich warm colors. A folded throw at the foot of your bed in a native American print would also be a good look, to tie the pillows in with.
Old iron floor lamps are a great way of introducing light into your room. Rawhide table lamp shades on your night stands can really complete your look also.
