“Lay Lady Lay…..Lay Across My Big Brass Bed”. Does this song ring a familiar note? Listen to the words. Back in the very early 70’s I had just started selling brass beds. I use to play it in my store in Georgetown , Washington DC.
Iron beds had yet to come into their own and brass beds were selling like hotcakes. I was a young kid who thought Bob Dylan was then end all do all protest voice of our generation. I play this song on an endless loop all day. My customers thought it is my anthem. I guess in some way it was. Metal beds started eclipsing the brass bed popularity and before I knew it my old favorite song was no longer appropriate for my patrons. Unfortunately Bob never wrote a song about an old iron bed.
As metal beds became more popular than brass beds and brass beds ran out, at an alarming rate, I replaced the song. I don’t even remember with what. But to this day I can’t turn it off when it comes on the radio.
Ironically, 40 years later I’m still dealing in beds……..and live about 1/4 mile from Bob Dylan. Small world.
