A Bed Time Story of an Antique Iron Bed
This American made beauty was discovered in a small rural town in
the Vermont countryside. It was actually in the home of a local antique
dealer. Although all our beds go through the same restoration process
of sandblasting off the old lead base paint it's always nice to come
across one, such as this , that has the original gold paint from the
mid 1800's.
Gold
paint was very popular due to the desire of people to try and achieve
the same look as the more expensive brass beds of the time. Conversely
today antique iron beds have far exceeded the value and collect-ability
of brass beds from the same period of time. The reason for this is due,
in part, to our ability to weld and adapt the old antique iron double
size frames to accommodate today's modern queen and king size mattresses
.
Unfortunately brass can not be welded and is not strong enough to
enlarge as is iron. Also with iron we can create countless old faux
finishes to better blend with and coordinate the linens and colors in
the bedroom setting.
In the "after king conversion" photo you can see
we've painted the frame an off white with subtle pink detailing on the
castings. This finish was done at the request of the new owner to match
a wallpaper sample she brought us. We also converted this frame to a
modern king size by adding appropriate scrolled iron rods and castings
to extend the width, yet maintain the symmetry and look of the original
design. If you've enjoyed seeing this transformation you may want to
bookmark our web sight as we will be posting a new "Before & After"
